Analogue Modelling Laboratory
Position A1: Postdoctoral Fellowship In Salt Tectonics

Dalhousie University: Post Doctoral Fellowship in Salt Tectonics

The Dalhousie University Tectonics & Structural Geology Group invites applications from qualified individuals to undertake research in extensional lithospheric processes and sediment basin modelling.

The Tectonics & Structural Geology Group, in collaboration with partners at Dalhousie, at the Geological Survey of Canada, and industrial partners undertakes a five-year study funded by the Atlantic Innovation Fund (AIF), and Canadian Foundation for Innovation (CFI). The study focuses on the development and application of an analogue model deformation laboratory for lithospheric extensional processes, rifting, and the formation of sedimentary basins at continental margins with particular emphasis on the salt tectonic processes, both in generic and case studies from offshore Atlantic Canada.

This position involves structural and seismic interpretation, analogue and geomechanical modelling of extensional continental margins with particular emphasis on salt tectonic processes. Candidates must have a strong background in tectonophysics, crustal deformation processes and tectonics of passive continental margins, and experience in structural/seismic interpretation. Additional skills in analogue modelling, material sciences, and software development are an asset.

As a member of the Analogue Modelling Team the PDF will participate in the design and technical development and maintenance of the hardware and software and will conduct experiments in various applications, help supervising graduate students, and interact with the Geodynamics Group at Dalhousie University performing concomitant research on the same subject through finite-element thermomechanical modelling. The position is advertised for, initially 2 years, at the Post Doctoral Fellow level (requiring Ph.D.), with salary up to $Can.36,000/yr. The starting date is 1st of July 2004, or by arrangement.

Required qualifications: 1) Ph.D. in earth sciences; 2) research accomplishments in lithospheric extensional processes, tectonics of continental margin and / or salt tectonics, as evidenced by publications; 3) record of successful participation in team research.

Desired skills: structural and seismic interpretation, experience and knowledge in material sciences and / or analogue modelling.
